Symptoms & signs
When Should You See a Kidney Stone Doctor in Gurgaon?
Many kidney stones are discovered after a sudden episode of pain. Others are found on a scan done for a different reason. A urologist can tell you whether your stone needs treatment or can safely be watched.
Consider seeing a urologist if you have:
- Pain in the side, back or lower abdomen that comes in waves or does not settle
- Blood in the urine, or burning and frequent urination
- Nausea or vomiting along with side pain
- A scan or ultrasound that shows a stone and you have been told it may need removal
- A stone that has not passed after a few weeks, even with treatment
- Repeated kidney stones
- Only one working kidney, or known kidney function problems, with a stone
Red-flag symptoms
Go to an emergency department immediately if kidney stone pain comes with fever or chills, if you cannot pass urine, or if vomiting does not stop. A blocked, infected kidney needs urgent treatment.

Kidney Stone Treatment in Gurugram: How We Decide What Is Right for You
No single procedure suits every stone. The right treatment depends on the size, position, number and hardness of the stone, how well your kidneys are working, whether there is infection, and your overall health. Dr. Arif Akhtar reviews each case before advising observation, medicines or a procedure, and explains the alternatives, the risks and the likely cost so you can decide with confidence.
Your care in four steps
- 1
Consultation
Dr. Akhtar listens to your symptoms and history and examines your reports.
- 2
Tests
Scans and tests confirm the size and position of the stone and check your kidney health.
- 3
Your plan
You get a clear recommendation, the other options, the risks, and a written cost estimate.
- 4
Treatment & follow-up
The procedure is carried out if needed, followed by a follow-up plan, stent removal if a stent was placed, and advice to reduce the chance of new stones.
Tests commonly used to diagnose kidney stones
Not every patient needs every test. Bring any scans you already have, because repeating them is often unnecessary.
- Ultrasound of the kidneys and bladder
- X-ray KUB (kidney, ureter, bladder)
- Non-contrast CT KUB, which shows stone size, position and density in detail
- Urine tests, including a urine culture if infection is suspected
- Blood tests, including kidney function (creatinine)
- Stone analysis after removal, and further metabolic tests for people who form stones repeatedly

Kidney Stone Removal & Surgery in Gurgaon: Treatment Options at a Glance
Surgery is not always needed. Here is how the main options compare:
| Option | How it works | Often considered for | Typical hospital stay* |
|---|---|---|---|
| Observation & medicines | Pain control, fluids and, in selected cases, medicines that help a small stone pass, with scheduled follow-up scans. | Small stones with mild symptoms, no infection and no blockage | Usually none |
| ESWL (shock wave lithotripsy) | Shock waves from outside the body break the stone into tiny pieces that pass in urine. | Selected small-to-medium kidney and upper ureter stones | Usually day care |
| RIRS (laser, retrograde intrarenal surgery) | A thin flexible scope is passed through the natural urinary passage. A laser breaks the stone. No skin incision. | Small-to-medium kidney stones, or stones not suited to ESWL | Day care or about 1 night |
| Ureteroscopy (URS) | A thin scope reaches the stone in the ureter and a laser breaks it. | Ureter stones | Day care or about 1 night |
| Mini-PCNL / PCNL | A small keyhole in the back lets a scope reach the kidney. The stone is broken and removed. | Large, hard or multiple kidney stones | Typically 1 to 3 days |
*Typical figures only. Stay and recovery vary from patient to patient and are confirmed by your urologist.
Laser · No skin incision
RIRS Laser Kidney Stone Treatment in Gurugram
Retrograde Intrarenal Surgery (RIRS): laser kidney stone surgery without a skin incision
RIRS, or retrograde intrarenal surgery, is a laser kidney stone treatment. A very thin, flexible scope is passed through the natural urinary passage up to the kidney, so there is no cut on the skin. A laser then breaks the stone into small pieces, which are removed or allowed to pass.
Who may be suitable for RIRS
- Small-to-moderate kidney stones (often up to about 2 cm; your urologist will advise)
- Stones that are not suitable for ESWL
- Selected patients who cannot stop blood-thinning medicines
What to expect
- The procedure is usually done under anaesthesia, so you do not feel it.
- A thin tube called a DJ stent is often left in for a short time and removed later.
- Mild burning, blood in the urine and stent discomfort for a few days are common.
- Many patients return to light work within a few days. Recovery varies.
Things to know
Larger stones may need more than one session. Like any procedure, RIRS carries risks, including infection, bleeding, stent-related discomfort, leftover fragments and, rarely, injury to the ureter. Dr. Akhtar explains these before you decide.

Keyhole surgery
PCNL & Mini-PCNL Surgery in Gurugram
Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy (PCNL): keyhole surgery for larger or complex kidney stones
PCNL, or percutaneous nephrolithotomy, is a keyhole operation used for larger kidney stones. A small opening (about a centimetre) is made in the back, and a thin scope is passed into the kidney. The stone is broken and the pieces removed. Mini-PCNL uses a smaller tract and finer instruments and may be suitable for selected stones.
When PCNL or Mini-PCNL is considered
- Large stones, often above about 2 cm
- Very hard stones or multiple stones in one kidney
- Staghorn stones that fill part of the kidney
- Stones that other methods are unlikely to clear fully
What to expect
- The operation is done under anaesthesia.
- A small drainage tube may be left in the kidney for a short time.
- Hospital stay is typically 1 to 3 days, though it varies.
- Soreness at the back and blood in the urine for a few days are common. Most people return to normal activity within one to two weeks.
Things to know
PCNL is a major endoscopic procedure. Risks include bleeding (which rarely needs a transfusion), infection, leftover fragments and, rarely, injury to nearby organs. Dr. Akhtar will go through the risks and alternatives with you.
Wondering about PCNL surgery cost in Gurgaon? See the cost section below
Non-surgical
ESWL (Lithotripsy) for Kidney Stones in Gurgaon
Shock wave lithotripsy: a non-surgical way to break selected kidney stones
ESWL, or extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy, uses focused shock waves from outside the body to break a kidney stone into small fragments. The fragments then pass naturally in the urine over days to weeks. There is no cut and no scope. [Confirm hospital has an ESWL machine & Dr. Akhtar performs ESWL, or set eswl = false]
Who may be suitable
- Smaller kidney stones and some upper ureter stones, commonly up to about 1 to 2 cm, depending on position and hardness
When ESWL may not be suitable
- Pregnancy
- Bleeding disorders that are not controlled
- Untreated urinary infection
- A blockage below the stone
- Very hard or large stones
What to expect
- A session usually lasts under an hour and is generally done as day care.
- Pain relief is given. You may feel discomfort during or after the session.
- Passing fragments can cause colicky pain and blood in the urine for some days.
- More than one session may be needed, and not every stone breaks completely.
Stone in the ureter
Ureter Stone Treatment in Gurgaon
A ureter stone is a kidney stone that has moved into the narrow tube joining the kidney to the bladder. It often causes sudden, severe, wave-like pain in the side that may travel to the groin.
If you are searching for a ureteric stone doctor in Gurgaon, Dr. Akhtar can assess where the stone is, whether it is likely to pass, and whether it is blocking the kidney.
Treatment options for ureter stones
- Watchful waiting with medicines and fluids for small stones in the lower ureter, under supervision with follow-up scans
- Ureteroscopy with laser (URS): a thin scope reaches the stone and a laser breaks it. This is the most common surgery for ureter stones
- ESWL for selected stones in the upper ureter
- DJ stent placement to relieve a blocked or infected kidney, followed by definitive stone treatment later
This is an emergency
A stone with fever, chills or no urine output is an emergency. Do not wait. Go to the nearest hospital emergency department.

After treatment
Recovery and Preventing New Kidney Stones
After treatment you will receive written instructions on medicines, activity, fluids and follow-up. If a DJ stent was placed, you will be told when it will be removed. Please keep that appointment, because a stent should not be left in longer than advised.
Kidney stones can come back. These habits help lower the risk for most people:
Drink enough fluids through the day to pass about 2 to 2.5 litres of urine, unless you have been told to limit fluids
Reduce salt, and avoid excess animal protein
Do not cut down calcium from food unless your doctor advises it
Ask about stone analysis, because advice depends on the type of stone

FAQs
Kidney Stone Treatment in Gurgaon: Your Questions Answered
Still have a question? Our team is happy to help.
Which doctor treats kidney stones?
A urologist treats kidney and ureter stones. Urologists are trained in medicines, scopes, laser and keyhole procedures for stones. At this clinic, you can consult Dr. Arif Akhtar, a urologist and uro-surgeon in Gurugram.
How do I choose the right kidney stone doctor in Gurgaon?
Look for a urologist with recognised qualifications and a valid registration, experience with stone procedures, a clear explanation of all your options and their risks, willingness to share a written cost estimate, and a plan for follow-up. You should never feel pressured into surgery, and a second opinion should always be welcome.
Do all kidney stones need surgery?
No. Small stones without infection or blockage can often pass with fluids, pain control and medicines under supervision. Treatment is advised when a stone causes ongoing pain, blockage, infection, bleeding or kidney damage, or when it is unlikely to pass on its own.
What is the difference between RIRS, PCNL and ESWL?
ESWL breaks stones from outside the body with shock waves. RIRS uses a thin scope through the natural passage and a laser, with no skin cut. PCNL and Mini-PCNL use a small keyhole in the back and are generally used for larger or complex stones. Your urologist picks the option based on your stone and your health.
Is RIRS laser treatment done without cuts?
Yes. RIRS is performed through the natural urinary passage, so there is no skin incision. It is done under anaesthesia, and a temporary DJ stent is often placed afterwards.
When is PCNL or Mini-PCNL needed?
PCNL or Mini-PCNL is usually considered for large, hard or multiple kidney stones, or stones that fill part of the kidney, and when other methods are unlikely to clear them.
Is kidney stone surgery painful?
You will be under anaesthesia during surgery, so you will not feel the procedure. Some discomfort afterwards is common, such as soreness, burning while passing urine, blood in the urine or stent irritation. It is managed with medicines, and your doctor will explain what to expect.
How long is recovery?
It varies. After ESWL, RIRS or ureteroscopy, many people return to light activity within a few days. After PCNL, recovery commonly takes one to two weeks. Follow the advice given for your case.
How much does kidney stone treatment cost in Gurgaon?
The cost depends on the stone, the procedure, the hospital stay and other factors. See the cost section above. We provide a written estimate once your reports are reviewed.
Does insurance cover kidney stone surgery?
Many policies cover medically necessary kidney stone surgery, subject to the policy terms. Please check your waiting period, limits and exclusions. [Add cashless insurers accepted. Verify]
Can a kidney stone be treated without surgery?
Some small stones pass on their own, and certain stone types may respond to medicines. Most larger stones will not dissolve, and home remedies should never delay care when there is severe pain, fever or a blockage. Your urologist can tell you whether watchful waiting is safe for your stone.
Can kidney stones come back?
Yes. Many people form another stone later. Drinking enough fluids, lowering salt and following the advice for your stone type can reduce the risk.
Is a ureter stone dangerous?
A ureter stone can block the flow of urine. Most small ones pass, but a stone with fever, chills or no urine output is an emergency, and a stone that does not pass can damage the kidney. Get it assessed by a urologist.
How soon can I get an appointment?
[Add real availability, e.g. same-day or next-day slots. Verify] Call, WhatsApp or submit the form, and our team will confirm a time.
Can I get a second opinion?
Yes. Bring your reports and any treatment plan you have been given. Dr. Akhtar will review them and explain your options.
